Electronics industry allowed to declare mandatory details on packages through QR codes

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs said on Saturday that the central government has allowed manufacturers of electronic products to declare certain mandatory details through QR codes for a period of one year, if not declared in the package itself.

Earlier, all pre-packaged goods including electronic products were required to declare all mandatory declarations on the package as per the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities), Rules 2011.

“The Department of Consumer Affairs has permitted electronic products under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities), (Second Amendment) Rules 2022 to declare certain mandatory declarations through QR codes for a period of one year, if the package itself has not been declared,” the government said.

This amendment will allow the industry to declare detailed information in digital form through QR codes. The ministry said this would allow important announcements to be effectively declared on the label in the package, while other descriptive information could be passed on to the consumer through a QR code.
