Former Goa CM removed as permanent invitee to top Congress panel

Congress local unit accuses Digambar Kamat of conspiring with BJP

New Delhi:

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday broke the whip and removed former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat as a permanent invitee to the Almighty Congress Working Committee with immediate effect.

The action comes days after Mr Kamat’s alleged role in the recent turmoil in the Goa Congress, where the party avoided a split in the unit.

Sources said Kamat was alleged to have played an active role with the BJP in the turmoil as some Congress MLAs did not attend the party’s meetings.

The Congress leadership had earlier removed Michael Lobo as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

“The Congress President has removed Shri Digambar Kamat from his present post as a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee with immediate effect,” a letter issued by the party said.

The party’s local unit accused Mr. Lobo and Mr. Kamat of “conspiracy” and “fond” with the ruling BJP to “split” the legislative wing of the old party.
