Worked! Rishabh Pant gives a thumbs-up to captain Rohit Sharma after a match-winning knock

Rishabh Pant was at his best as he took India over the winning line in the third and final ODI against England on Sunday. India were trailing by 21/2 after losing both their openers cheaply when Pant came out to bat at number four. The fall of Virat Kohli and then Surya Kumar Yadav made it more difficult for India to chase down the target but Pant held the ground.

Scoring his maiden ODI century, Pant hit a boundary off his trademark reverse sweep shot to guide India to a series win. As Pant finished the job for his team, an excited skipper Rohit Sharma gave a thumbs-up response to the southpaw. Pant responded to the gesture in the same manner.

India chased down England’s 259 for a 5-wicket win to seal the game and the series. After winning the toss, India decided to bowl, a decision that was soon proved right by Mohammad Siraj and Hardik Pandya.

Siraj dismissed Jonny Bairstow for a duck in the second over of the match and then took the wicket of Joe Root to reduce the hosts to 12/2. And when the partnership between Ben Stokes and Joe Root showed England gaining some momentum, Pandya sent both the batsmen to the pavilion. On 149, half of England’s team returned to the pavilion. A 48-run partnership between David Willey and Craig Overton brought some stability to the innings but England were bundled out for 259 in the 46th over.

Pandya took four for 24 and returned to play a key role with the bat as well. The all-rounder shared a crucial 133-run partnership for the 5th wicket with Rishabh Pant and scored 71 runs in 55 balls.

India go home with a 2-1 series win in both the white-ball series against England. After defeating the hosts in the 3-match T20I competition, the Indian team came to England for the first ODI. Banking on Jasprit Bumrah’s show, India finished the English innings for just 110 runs and returned to chase it down in 18.4 overs.

Bumrah took 6 wickets for 19 runs in his career best. The hosts kept their hopes alive with a win in the second ODI, but the series eventually went in India’s favour.
